The life of a professional tennis player is going from sunshine to snow, living out of a suitcase as Polish player Marta Domachowska has found out.
|Height:||5 ft 9 1/2 in (1.76 m)|
Having failed to qualify for the 2011 Australian Open in the sunshine of the Southern Hemisphere she flew straight to Grenoble in Switzerland to play in an ITF Challenger event where she has reached the Quarter Final.
Born in Warsaw on January 16th 1986 she is coached by Ostrowski Pawel having started playing tennis when she was 7-years-old.
She loved it immediately and used to watch Steffi Graf playing on television wanting to be just like her.
She still loves tennis and is happy in her private life as well, being engaged to former champion butterfly and freestyle swimmer Pawel Korzeniowski.
She won her first two ITF Singles titles and first doubles title in 2002 when she was 16-years-old and entered the Tour Rankings for the first time on May 20 2002 at 745. She won her third singles title and by the end of the season, her ranking had risen to 244.
In 2003 she reached the semi-finals of the Junior Australian Open and in 2004 she won two more ITF Titles and reached the WTA Tour Final in Seoul. She beat Anna Smashnova to reach the semi-finals in Sopot and reached the quarter-finals in Casablanca. This meant she entered the Top 100 in the world for the first time.
The improvement continued in 2005 when she made her debut in all four major tournaments and her ranking shot up to number 46 on 6th June.
She won her first WTA Tour Title with Robert Vinci in a tournament in Canberra and reached the singles semi-finals in Memphis which meant her ranking went up again to 37.
Then she hit a slump and failed to get beyond the first round of all four Grand Slam events. At the end of 2006, she finished the year as number 90 in the world.
She managed to qualify in Seoul and Stockholm in 2007 but failed to qualify for 9 WTA events and lacked a single win in all the Grand Slams that year.
She won a $100,000 ITF tournament in Poitiers having come through qualifying and it was her first win for four years since 2003 and the biggest tournament win of her career.
In the 2008 Australian Open she had the best result in any Grand Slam as she reached the 4th round having beaten Li Na in the process before losing to Venus Williams. She and Agnieszka Radwanska became the first Polish players to reach the 4th round of a Grand Slam and Domachowska returned to the top 100 at 82.
Marta Domachowska represented Poland in the singles at the 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing but lost in the first round.
Her losing streak continued and in 2009 she lost in the first round of all four Grand Slams including the US Open qualifying but did manage to reach the singles quarter-final in Istanbul. She did not have any better luck in 2010 losing most of her matches and her ranking has now dropped to 297 in the world.
