Elena Bogdan (Romania) Biography


The 6ft blonde Rumanian player continually had to tell people she is no relation to another promising female tennis player Ana Bogdan after people started labeling them “the next Williams sisters.”

Born in Craiova, Romania on March 28th, 1992, she was one of the best juniors Romania had ever produced.

Now she is rapidly climbing the world rankings. On February 14th, 2011 she hovered just outside the top 200 as 201 and she has only been a professional for 18 months. At the end of the 2012 season, she was ranked 262.

Her mother Angela is a former athlete and she started playing tennis at 7-years-old. She first came to notice at the age of 16 when she reached the 2008 French Open girls final but she lost to Simona Halep in three sets. The following year she won the 2009 French Open girls doubles title with Noppawan Lertcheewakarn, they beat Timea Babos and Heather Watson 3-6/6-3/10-8.

She has been coached by Artemon Apostu-Efremov and Adrian Gavrila and she also enjoys skiing and swimming. Off the court she listens to Beyonce, Eminem, and Rihanna’s music and she loves going to the cinema, Titanic and the Shawshank Redemption is among her favorite films and her favorite television show was Prison Break.

She had yet to win her first WTA Title but in her senior career, she has won 3 ITF titles, all on clay, two in Bucharest and one in Madrid on October 10th, 2010.

She started 2011 by reaching the quarter-finals of two qualifying events at the $100,000 tournament in California where she was beaten by Laura Siegemund and the Copa Colsanitas International in Bogota where she lost in three sets to Corinna Dentoni.

In her first attempt at the Australian Open in Melbourne, she lost in the first round of qualifying to Lauren Albanese in three sets.

Elena Bogdan has been part of the Wilson team for her rackets and worn Lotto clothes and shoes. She has been tipped as one of the players to watch in the future, and she is sure to climb up the rankings.
