Stefanie Voegele

Stefanie Voegele
(Switzerland) Biography

Birthdate: 10-March-90
Birthplace: Leuggern, Switzerland
Height: 5 ft 6 in
Plays: Rigth-Handed
Turned Pro: 2006

She has been called "The new Martina Hingis" because of her looks and personality - she still has a little way to go before she catches up with Hingis' standard of tennis.

The Swiss have waited a long time to find a female player worthy of replacing Hingis after she announced her retirement and they are hoping Stefanie Voegele will fit the bill.

She was a promising junior but 2010 was not a good year for her, she only had one big win when she beat Nadia Petrova in Dubai. The Swiss player puts it down to the fact that during the whole season she was consistently injured and lost a few close matches.

Born on March 10th 1990 in Leuggern, Switzerland, where she still lives, she began playing tennis at the age of 4-years-old when she was introduced to it by her parents Edith and Bruno. She lived with her family and her cat in the town where she was born when she is not travelling.

She loves to relax by watching television and her favourite programmes are "The Simpsons" and "Friends."

She has been coached by Ivo Werner and in 2009 she played in several WTA Qualifying events but for five months she never won a main draw match.

In June that year she beat Ekaterina Makarova en route to the Quarter Finals in Birmingham where her successful run ended.

In 2009 she played her first Wimbledon Championships but met Defending Champion Venus Williams in the first round. She did manage to get five games off her but afterwards she said Venus was the toughest opponent she had ever faced.

On the point of tears and feeling beaten up after their meeting she said, "She goes in playing so aggressive and she doesn't stop."

For nearly a decade girls like Voegele have been trying to unseat the Williams sisters and she said "I don't know how to do it. It is a long, hard climb to the Top 20.

"You must overcome disrespect, hold your own in the locker room and accept that some of the Queens of the court will blank you and then call you Bitch when changing ends."

In 2010 she played her third French Open and she met the other Williams sister Serena in the first round. The first set was closer than when she played Venus with Voegele losing it on a tie break, but Serena dominated the second set and took the match 7-6(2)/6-2.

Stefanie Voegele started 2011 by losing to Sania Mirza in the first round of qualifying in the ASB Classic in Auckland but at the Medibank International in Sydney she reached the third round of qualifying before losing again to Ekaterina Makarova. At the Australian Open she met Lesia Tsurenko in the first round of qualifying, who proved too strong for the Swiss girl.
