In an impressive four sets Final Roger Federer defeated Marcos Baghdatis 5-7 7-5 6-0 6-2 in the men's singles final at Melbourne Park.
The final had been a great spectacle and show case for tennis as a true great of the game clashed with a potential new contender to his future crown. Marcos Baghdatis began the match with all guns firing with no sign of nerves in his first major final. With an impressive array of powerful shots he out gunned Roger Federer to a 5-7 first set.
The Second set continued as the first, with both players trading shots. Baghdatis forehand was particularly impressive. However, the match had been finally balanced and as Federer won the second set the balance of power had shifted in his favour.
In the third and fourth set a tiring Baghdatis and a fall in his tempo saw a revitalised Federer go up a gear to take the remaining two sets with commanding ease 6-0 and 6-2.
Roger Federer has achieved seven grand slam finals passing fellow champions such as Don Budge, Boris Becker, Jack Crawford, and Stefan Edberg. At fourteen titles Pete Sampras's is the yardstick to reach and if not surpass.
Rod Laver, tennis great watched the game and commented on Roger Federer game,
“As soon as they make a mistake, Roger just sits on them," Laver said of the modern-day marvel.”
“His court coverage is uncanny ... he can do it all from behind the baseline, but if they slip up, he's in there.”
“If his backhand's in good shape, he just rolls.”
