Polona Hercog never had a dull childhood. Born in Maribor, Slovenia's second largest city, she grew up in a home with her mother's florist and her father's bar attached. She also had a menagerie of her own with a cat, a dog and a turtle.

She started playing tennis at the age of 4-years-old when former French Open Champion Mima Jausovec opened a tennis clinic in Maribor. Her father persuaded her to tag along and from her first visit she never looked back.

At the age of 14 she moved to Italy for 18 months to train properly and she speaks fluent Slovenian, English and Italian.

She still lives in Maribor but trains in Budapest with her coach Zoltan Kuharsky, whom she has been with since July 2007.

She made her debut on the WTA Tour at a tournament in Portoroz, Slovenia where she lost to Elena Vesnina in 3 sets.

Partnering Jessica Moore she won the French Open and Wimbledon Junior Doubles Titles in 2008 and at the 2009 French Open she played in the senior competition and beat Alisa Kleybanova in three sets but was then beaten by Aravane Rezai.

She lost in the first round of the US Open and her bad parch continued into 2010 but in Acapulco she reached her first WTA singles final and won her first WTA Tour doubles title with Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.

Hercog caused an upset in the 2nd round of the 2010 French Open beating Lucie Safarova, and in September that year she won the double in Seoul partnering Julia Goerges.

In 2011 she lost in the first round of the Brisbane International and in the qualifying competition for the Sydney International.

She was also beaten in the first round of the Australian Open by Anastasija Sevastova.

Polona Hercog was part of Wilson's Next Generation - Rising Stars but now she is part of the WTA Tour Top 50. As of 17th January 2011 she was 47 in the world. She has played in the past with one of the best rackets in the world, the Wilson Blade 98.
