Laura Robson
(Great Britain) Biography

Birthdate: 21-January-94
Birthplace: Melbourne, Australia
Height: 5 ft 10 in (1.78 m)
Plays: Left-handed
Turned Pro: 2008

Londoner, Laura Robson gave Britain new hope when she won Junior Wimbledon in 2008 as an unseeded player. She was the youngest player in the tournament but she knocked out Number One seed Melanie Oudin en route to the final and defeated Number Three seed Noppawan Lertcheewakarn to take the title. She was the first British Player to win Junior Wimbledon since Annabel Croft in 1984.

Laura is your typical teenager who loves watching X-Factor, she is voting for Matt in the current series, and she has a massive crush on the retired Russian player Marat Safin. Following her win at Junior Wimbledon she pretended at the Press Conference he was to be her date at the Champions Dinner.

She says "He is phenomenally good looking, but he's old, 30." She also treasures a picture on her Blackberry of her date for the end of tournament dinner at the 2010 Australian Hopman Cup. She went with Andy Murray, recently split up from his girlfriend, after they reached the mixed doubles final.

Robson also loves cooking and on her parents' wedding anniversary on October 19th she cooked them a special meal. She gave them a fig, prosciutto and mozerella salad starter, a main course of grilled salmon and chilli sauce and a dessert of meringue with pears, cream, toasted hazelnuts and chocolate sauce.

She got herself into hot water with the WTA earlier this year when she gave an interview to Vogue Magazine without a chaperone from her management company being present. She told the interviewer she would rather turn in early than go to wild parties and she dislikes drink and hates smoking.

Talking about her fellow competitors on the WTA circuit she said, "Some of the tennis girls, they're sluts. They go with every guy and make such a bad name for themselves - and you don't want to be known for stuff like that, you want to be more discreet."

The WTA was furious and asked for a transcript of the article, realising she had talked to the interviewer unsupervised but it could have had serious repercussions for the rising star. Instead her chaperone guided her in writing a grovelling apology and the WTA decided the matter was closed.

Robson now plays on the professional tour and won her first senior title in 2008. She is still young enough to play in juniors and opted to lead Great Britain in the Maureen Connolly Cup competition against the United States this summer at Eastbourne. It was run in conjunction with the Aegon International Championships but Robson decided not to compete in the Senior event. Britain narrowly missed winning the trophy on the last day having led until the final matches.

She has slowly been climbing up the World Rankings and as of 18th October 2010 she had reached the top 200 in both singles (189) and doubles (126).
